You can lodge a visa application yourself. This explainer covers what a migration agent actually does and the three reasons people commonly give for using one: time, the strain of a long process, and risk.

“Why not just DIY and save the money?” It’s a fair question. We cook with YouTube tutorials, assemble our own IKEA furniture and lodge our own tax returns. Set your mind to it, and you can even represent yourself in court.

You can lodge your own visa application, too. This post isn’t an argument that you must use a migration agent. It sets out what a migration agent actually does, and the reasons people give for using one, so you can weigh the choice for yourself.

A matter of priorities, not right or wrong

Some people think paying for a business class flight is a waste of money; to others it’s the obvious choice. Neither is wrong. They simply have different priorities.

A professional service isn’t a necessity either. Whether it’s worth paying for depends on what you want to get out of it and what you’re comfortable handling yourself.

What a migration agent does: more than filling in forms

A migration agent’s role goes beyond completing forms on your behalf. In practice, the work includes:

  • building an application strategy that fits your particular situation;

  • interpreting complex legal requirements and applying them to your case; and

  • identifying potential risks before an application is lodged.

Engaging a professional does not determine the outcome. The Department assesses and decides every application. An agent’s role is to help you understand the requirements and the risks, and to prepare accordingly.

In Australia, only migration agents registered with the OMARA (Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority) and Australian legal practitioners may give immigration assistance. You can check an agent’s registration yourself before you book a consultation.

Three reasons people turn to a professional

1. Time and trial-and-error

You can study alone at home, so why pay for a tutor? To save time and avoid costly mistakes. Visas work much the same way. Instead of learning every requirement and step from scratch, drawing on the approach of someone who has done it before can cut down the time and the trial-and-error involved.

2. The strain of a long process

Same destination, so why fly business class? To arrive with energy left and get straight back to your life.

Visa processing can take months or even years. For some people, the reason to use a professional is to spend that time focused on their work and life rather than on sleepless nights over the process.

3. Managing risk

Few people represent themselves in a court case that truly matters. A visa often has your career, your life in Australia and your family’s future riding on it.

A single mistake can leave a refusal record that is costly and slow to undo. The higher the cost of getting it wrong, the more people tend to want the risks checked before they lodge.

Summary

  • You can lodge a visa application yourself. Using a migration agent is a choice, not a requirement.

  • An agent’s work goes beyond filling in forms: it covers strategy for your situation, interpreting the law, and identifying risks before lodgement.

  • The reasons people give for using a professional usually come down to three things: time and trial-and-error, the strain of a long process, and the cost of a refusal.

  • Using an agent does not guarantee a result. The Department makes the decision.

Whether to DIY or engage a professional comes down to how much time you can invest, how comfortable you are with the process, and how much is riding on this particular visa.
